The Assistant Director, Research and Instruction is responsible for providing guidance regarding the planning, promotion, delivery, and assessment of Neumann Library research and instruction services. Develops and implements procedures for the programs. Supervises Research and Instruction Services librarians. Participates in and distributes library instruction sessions and other instruction activities. Makes decisions regarding equipment and software for the library classroom and instruction materials on the Neumann Library website. Performs the duties of a Research and Instruction Librarian.
Duties
  • Supervises the library's Research and Instruction team, leading departmental strategic planning, mentoring and assigning team members tasks, assessing performance and advocating for the needs of the unit to library administration. Oversees and participates in development and maintenance of Research and Instruction team training and procedural documentation.
  • Oversees, develops, promotes, and participates in the delivery and assessment of Neumann Library instruction services. Mentors and trains librarians in the delivery and assessment of face-to-face and online instruction services. Receives faculty requests for instruction and distributes sessions among librarians. Collects and maintains instruction services statistics for purposes of reporting and planning.
  • Oversees, develops, promotes, and participates in the delivery and assessment of Neumann Library research services. Mentors and trains librarians in the delivery and assessment of academic library research and reference services. Provides general reference and detailed research assistance to library patrons at Research Consultation Desk and online. Creates and maintains library research desk schedule. Collects and maintains research services statistics for purposes of reporting and planning.
  • Oversees and participates in development and maintenance of library's electronic and print research guides, including both subject and course guides, as well as informational pages about the library's research and instruction services program. Mentors and trains librarians in the creation of library research materials. Participates in the design, authoring, and continuing development of the library's website.
  • Works as a member of the Library Leadership Team in strategic plan development, implementation, and assessment.
  • Serves as liaison to faculty in assigned subject areas, with the object of communicating about library services and obtaining information to help guide collection development.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of the library collection. Recommends materials for purchase in assigned subject areas. Participates in and makes recommendations in collection evaluation projects.
  • Maintains awareness of emerging trends in library research and instruction services, seeking out and participating in training and other professional development as needed.
  • Serves on library committees, task forces, and UHCL shared governance committees as needed and performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required:
Master's degree in Library Science.
At least three years of professional experience in reference and instruction in an academic library.

Desired:
Supervisory experience.
Strategic planning experience.
Demonstrated application of ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
